The holidays are typically associated with frigid temperatures, lots of snowfall, people wearing several layers of clothing and spending time staying warm near a fireplace. In South Florida, the holidays are a completely different experience. Winter gear may consist of perhaps a light jacket on the rare day when the temperatures dip into the lower sixties, and the last time it snowed here was way back in 1977. The holiday spirit is celebrated and embraced quite differently in South Florida.
You’ll find plenty of homes decorated for the holidays, but to take a stroll through a scenic “winter wonderland” you may be better off visiting Santa’s Enchanted Forest, a Miami mainstay that sticks around for three months. It’s also not unusual to perhaps see someone dressed in a Santa Claus suit taking a leisurely barefoot stroll through the sand on the beaches either.
Miami basketball team the Miami Heat also celebrate Christmas Day with a game, and this year the team will be up against the New Orleans Pelicans at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. Music fans can enjoy performances by the latest chart-topping artists at the annual Y100 Jingle Ball, headlined this year by singer-songwriter The Weeknd.
South Florida knows how to spend the holidays, it’s just we do things a little differently than the rest of the country.
