Did you know that Bay Harbor Islands was at one point the site of the largest amount of Miami Modern architecture in the United States? The town nestled near Bal Harbour and Surfside is known for its condo and apartment buildings that were designed by a number of renowned architects including Henry Hohauser, Morris Lapidus, and more. These individuals were responsible for the metamorphosis of Miami’s Art Deco design of the 1930s into the Miami Modern design that began to emerge during the 20th century.
Back in 2014, Bay Harbor’s East Island (which is restricted to multi-family and commercial structures) made the list of the “11 Most Endangered Historic Places” in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and since then, the island has seen a tremendous amount of growth. There is a significant amount of redevelopment in the works, with upcoming like projects like the 41-unit O Residences currently under development. The units will range between 1,060 to 1,450 square feet with asking prices of $700,000 to $1.2 million. In fact, developers have pretty much staked their claim on all of East Island’s waterfront land and are now setting their sights on buildings and dry lots.
The seven-story Bijou Bay Harbor is another upcoming project also featuring 41 units ranging from 900 square feet to 2,000 square feet and there are townhouse projects in the works too, further reinforcing the redevelopment surge in Bay Harbor Islands real estate.
